After dropping off the rental car from our 1-day road trip adventure, we took a quick 50 minute flight from Christchurch to Queenstown.  The photograph above is one I took from the airplane as we were circling the Queenstown airport.  Queenstown is an unbelievably gorgeous resort town surrounded by the Southern Alps and sits right on the edge of Lake Wakatipu.  The Remarkables are a saw-toothed range of mountains that provide an impressive backdrop to Lake Wakatipu; the range is clearly visible across the lake from the town.

We checked into Base Discovery Lodge in Queenstown, a lively, centrally located youth hostel.  This was definitely the big party hostel of the town.

After settling in, our first item of business was to muster up the balls for sky diving.  Since I had gotten out of sky diving in Australia with a promise to follow up in New Zealand, I was determined to make good on this promise.  We headed to NZone to sign up for a tandem sky dive for the following day, and ended up spending the remainder of the time fretting about our potential untimely deaths.

This was the itinerary for the 3 awesome days we spent in Queenstown:

Day 1: Bob’s Peak
Skyline Gondola to Bob’s Peak, Lake Wakatipu, The Remarkables, Kiwi Birdlife Sanctuary

Day 2: The Ultimate Jump
Tandem sky diving

Day 3: Milford Sound
Kiwi Experience trip to Te Anau, Milford Sound, Fiordland
